Are AI Detectors Accurate?

Short answer: not reliably enough to use alone. Here's the actual mechanism behind that, not just a hedge.

How AI detectors actually work

Most AI-text detectors don't have some secret signature that proves a text is machine-written. Instead, they measure statistical patterns, how predictable each word choice is given the words before it, how uniform sentence length and structure are, and score the text on how closely it resembles typical language-model output. That's a probability estimate, not a fingerprint, and it's built on patterns that shift every time a new model version changes how it writes.

The false-positive problem

Because detectors are pattern-matching against "typical" writing, anything that writes in an unusually uniform or formal style gets flagged more often, including plenty of human writing. This has been documented most consistently for non-native English speakers, whose sentence structure tends to be more regular and less idiomatic than a native speaker's, which detectors read as machine-like. Very short text and heavily formulaic writing (cover letters, standard business emails) are also prone to false positives for the same reason.

Detectors vs. humanizers: a moving target

A whole category of tools, AI humanizers like Undetectable AI and Humbot, exists specifically to rewrite AI-generated text to score lower on these detectors. When a detector improves, humanizers adjust; when a humanizer gets good at beating one detector, the detector vendor retrains against that pattern. Neither side is stable for long, which is itself a reason not to treat any single detector score as a final verdict months or years after the tool was tested.

How to actually use one

  • Treat a high AI-score as a reason to look closer, not as proof on its own
  • For anything with real consequences, grading, hiring, publishing, pair the detector with a human read of the actual content
  • Don't rely on a single detector; different tools disagree with each other regularly on the same text
  • Be aware that non-native English writing and short, formal text are more prone to false positives than average
