MCP servers you would actually install
Last verified: 2026-09
Model Context Protocol is how Claude Desktop, Cursor, and other hosts attach extra tools: a folder, a database, GitHub, a browser. The host launches a small server; the model calls its tools. 79 servers here, 20 of them official Anthropic reference servers. This is not a scrape of the public registry.
A server is as powerful as the token or path you give it. Filesystem with $HOME can read your SSH keys.
Postgres with an owner URL can drop tables. Slack with chat:write posts as the bot.
We write that down on every page, next to a config block you can paste.

Start with these four
A project folder, GitHub on a fine-grained PAT, Fetch for public pages, Postgres on a read-only user. Add a browser or Slack only when those four are not enough.

What to look for
- Root or role, not the brand. The jail is the directory, the IAM role, the Slack channels — not the npm package name.
- One search API, one browser, one forge. Brave plus Exa plus Tavily does not make better answers.
- Read-only first. You can add write scopes later. You cannot un-send a Slack message the model posted.
- Official when it exists. Community packages move. We still list them, and we say so.

FAQ
Is this the official MCP registry?
No. The official registry is a metadata dump of tens of thousands of packages. We keep a short list we would run, with install JSON and a warning.
Do I need a server to use Claude or Cursor?
No. MCP is optional. Install one when the model needs a specific system you already have — a repo, a DB, a Slack workspace.
Can these servers run in the cloud?
Some have a remote URL (GitHub official). Most of this list is local stdio: your machine launches the process. We do not host other people's MCP servers.
