ChatGPT vs. Claude vs. Gemini
All three are frontier general-purpose chatbots, and picking between them comes down to a handful of concrete differences, not vague claims about which is "smartest."
| ChatGPT | Claude | Gemini | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maker | OpenAI | Anthropic | |
| Strongest at | Broadest plugin and app ecosystem | Long-document writing and reasoning | Google Workspace integration |
| Free tier | Yes, older/rate-limited model | Yes, older/rate-limited model | Yes, tied to a Google account |
| Best fit if... | You want the widest third-party integrations | You write or edit long documents regularly | You already live in Gmail, Docs, and Sheets |
Writing quality
This is the most subjective axis and also the one people argue about most. In practice, Claude tends to produce prose that reads less like a template, fewer stock transitions, less repetitive structure, especially on longer pieces. ChatGPT is close behind and has more custom-tone controls through custom instructions. Gemini is competent but often the most generic-sounding of the three by default.
Coding
Claude has a strong reputation for coding help, in part because Anthropic ships a dedicated Claude Code product for terminal-based development. ChatGPT's Codex and code interpreter features are close competitors. Gemini's coding ability has improved significantly but is generally considered a step behind the other two for complex, multi-file tasks.
Long documents and context
Claude is generally the strongest of the three at holding coherent context across a long document or extended back-and-forth without losing track of earlier details. If you're regularly working with long contracts, transcripts, or multi-chapter documents, that's the practical edge that matters more than a headline context-window number, which changes with every model update anyway.
Ecosystem and integration
This is where Gemini has a real, structural advantage: if you already use Gmail, Docs, Sheets, or Android, Gemini is built into surfaces you're already in, not a separate app you have to remember to open. ChatGPT has the largest third-party plugin and custom-GPT ecosystem of the three. Claude's integrations are the leanest of the three, focused more on developer tools (via its API and Claude Code) than consumer app connections.
Pricing
All three offer a usable free tier and a roughly $20/month individual paid plan with higher usage caps and access to the current frontier model. Gemini's paid tier is often bundled into a broader Google One subscription rather than sold purely standalone, which can make it the better deal if you already pay for Google storage. Check ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini's own pages for current numbers, since all three adjust pricing and limits periodically.
The short answer
If you want the widest ecosystem of integrations and plugins, ChatGPT. If you write, edit, or reason over long documents regularly, Claude. If you're already deep in Google Workspace, Gemini, because the integration savings outweigh a small gap in raw output quality.
