Azure MCP server
Last verified: 2026-09
Azure Resource Manager via MCP.
Community Cloud & infra Needs a secret Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code
What it does
microsoft/mcp is an index of Microsoft MCP servers (Foundry, Azure, docs), not a single npx @azure/mcp that does all of Azure. Pick the server in that README that matches the job and authenticate with Azure CLI or a service principal.
It sits in Cloud & infra: Most of these are admin APIs.
Good for
- az login on a sandbox subscription, then install one Microsoft MCP server from the monorepo table.
- Docs/Foundry servers before resource-create tools.
- Create resources only in a sandbox, never the company tenant on day one.
- Skip it if you only needed SQL — Postgres or Toolbox.
Tools
- per-server Azure / Foundry / docs tools — Open the monorepo table and install one server. Do not assume a unified tool list.
Config (Claude Desktop / Cursor / Windsurf)
Paste the JSON below. Same mcpServers shape. Replace placeholder paths and secrets.
Windows paths look like C:\\Users\\you\\project, not /path/to.

{
"mcpServers": {
"azure": {
"command": "npx",
"args": [
"-y",
"@azure/mcp"
]
}
}
}
Windsurf remote MCP: use serverUrl instead of url if the block below is HTTP.
One-liner: npx -y @azure/mcp
Secrets it wants: Azure CLI login or AZURE_* env
How to get started
- az login on a sandbox subscription, or set a service principal.
- Install the specific Microsoft MCP server you need (docs vs Azure resource ops).
- Resource-create tools belong on a sandbox, not the company tenant.
Access risk
Azure write tools + a privileged identity create spend and delete resource groups.
When to skip it
Skip it for AWS/GCP, or if you only needed a SQL database (Postgres/Toolbox).
Instead: AWS, Google Cloud, Kubernetes.

Azure CLI login or a service principal. Privileged identity + write tools delete resource groups and create spend.
