arXiv MCP server
Last verified: 2026-09
Search and read arXiv papers.
Community Browser & search No API key Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude Code
What it does
Search arXiv, download a paper, read it in chunks, pull LaTeX and a citation graph. Not a generic web search.
It sits in Browser & search: Three different jobs get mixed up here.
Good for
- Search arXiv by title, author, or id and read the abstract first.
- Download a paper and read it in sections instead of stuffing a whole PDF in context.
- Pull LaTeX or a citation graph when the paper has them.
- Build a short reading list of related papers without opening the browser.
Tools
- search_papers — Query arXiv.
- get_abstract / download_paper / read_paper — Metadata, PDF, and text.
- list_papers / read_paper_section / get_paper_outline — Navigate a downloaded paper.
- get_paper_latex / citation_graph — Source and citations when available.

One-liner: uvx arxiv-mcp-server
Secrets it wants: none
How to get started
- uvx arxiv-mcp-server (add --python 3.11 if the host has an old cached env).
- Search one arXiv id you know, then read the abstract before downloading.
- Papers land on disk — pick a folder you do not mind filling.
Access risk
Read-only on the API. Disk fills up if you download indiscriminately.
When to skip it
Skip it for news or docs (Fetch / Context7). It will not log into publisher sites.
